B-cycle Introduces First Bike Share Tricycle; Piloted in Madison B-cycle System

“B-Trike” providing bike share access to those not comfortable on a two-wheeled cycle

(Waterloo, WI – April 17, 2013) B-cycle, one of the nation’s leading providers of bike sharing systems, today announced the introduction of the “B-Trike,” the first fully integrated bike share tricycle. Madison B-cycle is currently street testing the B-Trike.  It will soon be made available to all B-cycle systems. The B-Trike provides public bike share access to those that are not comfortable riding a two-wheeled bike.

“The B-Trike is a commitment that I made to advocate Laureen Ferris from the City and County of Denver who championed for persons with disabilities,” said Bob Burns, President of B-cycle, LLC. “She pushed me to think of ways to expand access to public bike share so I made this commitment to her to develop the world’s first integrated and mainstreamed bike share trike. She liked the idea. And, while Laureen has since passed away, the B-Trike is a lasting testament to her determination and advocacy for the disabled.”

Trek Bicycle Corporation designed the B-Trike for use in any B-cycle system. The tricycle has both a hand/parking brake and coaster brakes, meaning that pedaling backwards provides additional braking power. The additional rear basket also provides convenience for larger loads.

The B-Trike integrates seamlessly into existing stations with no need for special docks or to remove adjacent bikes. You checkout and return the B-Trike just like you use a regular B-cycle. While any B-cycle user can check out the B-Trike, B-cycle hopes users will be courteous and leave the B-Trike for those who really need it. “This is a bit of an experiment,” Burns said. “We will put it out there and see how people interact with it.” Regular usage fees apply. The B-Trike will be available to all B-cycle systems after testing in Madison, WI.
